Hi Pjuggers -
I am CTO of Portico Systems - we are based in Philly but have an office in Beaverton. (it used to be in Hillsboro but we just moved). I have never been to your group's meeting as I am not in Portland often, but hope to attend the next time I am in town.
Quick background - Portico is a Java/Oracle (and some SQL Server) shop. We also use Postgres, MySQL, and all the usual Java suspects (Spring, Hibernate, JPA 2.0, Richfaces, GWT, Droolz, ANTLR, etc...) We sell what is most simply described as "ERP" software to health insurers. We help them cut their administrative costs, which is what they are all having to do to adopt to healthcare reform.
I am emailing your list as I saw you were asking for topic ideas - I have done a talk on Clojure with a side of Robotics a few times now - would it be of interest? The talk covers the basics of functional programming, clojure, and the extra java goodness that clojure has built into it. I then demonstrate using functional programming (using clojure) to control a little robot that has lasers and a camera.
I did the talk at the Philly Emerging Technologies for the Enterprise conference (this is our east coast and much smaller version of something distantly like OSCon): http://phillyemergingtech.com/2009/speakers.php
Link to the abstract here: http://phillyemergingtech.com/2009/abstractsTab.php?sessID=39
I also did an updated version of the presentation at the Philly Java User's group: http://phillyjug.jsync.com/meetings/clojure-and-the-robot-apocalypse-by-scott-fraser
And I have done the presentation internally at Portico.
I guess one other potential topic I could do is Java security - I have done this one a few times, once at the Philly JUG and twice at Portico internally: http://phillyjug.jsync.com/meetings/secure-java-programming-by-scott-fraser
You can get the original powerpoint for the security deck here: http://fraser.blogs.com/pcl/2008/01/secure-java-pro.html
So that's a couple ideas, not sure if they are inline with what you all like to cover, but let me know if anything is of interest.
