Job Description

Job Title: Senior Software Engineer

 

Department:  Product Engineering

Job Family:  Software Engineering

Grade Within Job Family (1-5) (1=entry level):  4

Reports To:  Development Manager

Supervises Directly:  none

Job Summary:  

The Senior Software Engineer designs, codes, unit tests, and maintains
applications produced by the client.  This includes user interfaces,
application logic, data access, architectural infrastructure, and
software tools to enhance development, installation, debugging, testing,
scalability, and performance.  Using software requirement
specifications, works with product architects, user interface
architects, system architects, development support, database architects,
and others in the performance of these functions.  Must adhere to all
company development standards and methodologies.  Provides technical and
troubleshooting support as needed.  Provides input for standards,
development tools, design and coding methodologies, testing, and
deployment.  Help train other engineers.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Function (E)

1.	Work closely with product architects, UI architects, system
architects, database architects, and others, in creating, updating, and
maintaining design specifications; advise on feasibility issues.

2.	Participate in group design and troubleshooting discussions

3.	Based upon design specifications, create, update, test, and
maintain code for specific development projects.  

 

E

4.	Assist in organizing and scheduling code reviews for software
development projects, and participate in these reviews; participate in
evaluating the work of other software engineers.

5.	Estimate level of effort and completion dates.

6.	Advise management on project status 

 

E

7.	Create technical documentation as needed, and assist in advising
others on the functionality of implemented products, features, and
enhancements.  Assist in troubleshooting as needed. 

 

 

8.	Contribute to software development process definition and
improvements. 

5% (#8-12)

 

9.	Suggest, train, and advocate coding techniques and standards.
Contribute to discussions regarding development and deployment tools,
development languages, and architectural infrastructure. 

 

 

10.	Provide technical guidance and leadership to other software
engineers with design, coding, and implementation issues. 

 

 

11.	As needed, train and familiarize other software engineers in
their responsibilities. 

 

 

12.	Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

 

 

Minimum Experience, Degrees, Certifications, and Licenses:

1.	Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or
related degree 
2.	5+ years software experience in object-oriented programming
(Java, C++, Delphi) 
3.	5+ years experience working with relational databases 
4.	4+ years object oriented analysis and design using UML 
5.	3-4 years experience with the following distributed programming
tools: CORBA, DCOM, or Java RMI 
6.	3-4 years experience with XML 
7.	1-2 years experience with J2EE 
8.	Experience with .Net or other architectures 
9.	Solid experience with J2EE application servers (WebSphere,
WebLogic, etc.) 

 

Preferred Experience, Degrees, Certifications, and Licenses:

1.	Experienced with C++, .Net, Smalltalk 
2.	1+ years domain knowledge and/or experience
