Here's a bit of counterpoint to the "it's OK" litany:

"Careers are out and skill sets are in. Workers should think in terms of being contractors instead of employees, academics and futurists say."

"Jobs will become even more portable because technology has made it easy to work from almost anywhere, including outside the country."

 

My personal current career algorithm is to find something specific that I really enjoy doing, that I'm reasonably good at, and that appears to have a bit of staying power, so that I can continue to do that even after I'm no longer viable in the traditional workforce. Call it a non-retirement plan.
