Sounds like a very interesting project.  Two things come to mind:
- Attensa server, RSS and Atom aggregation and mashup
- Google wave

Both are deployable behind the firewall.

I spent quite a bit of time last year working with Attensa.

If you don't mind, it would be facinating to hear how your project
progresses and what decisions you make.
