[PJUG Javamail] Is software engineering in the US dead?

Indeed, I'll have to echo the comments from Brian and some of the other posters.
While the offshore outsourcing trend will continue, the US should continue to lead true innovation efforts and new product development for several decades, barring some economic or political policy disaster(s). Yet another example of Joseph Schumpeter's creative destruction...as jobs disappear from the Fortune 500, new jobs must and will be created by entrepreneurs.
The lone geek archetype is dead, or nearly so, at least in corporate America. The hiring managers that I work with are increasingly demanding strong functional skillsets such as project management, business analysis, etc., as well as coding skills. Those skills are hard to outsource, as others have noted. Looked at another, the ability to code software is quickly becoming a commodity, while the ability to create useful, intuitive, effective tools from software code, will be increasingly in demand.
Old horse, already beaten: the US needs to dramatically ramp up it's engineering curricula. However, those graduating from CS programs should have tremendous opportunities a few years down the road, as the Baby Boomers leave the workforce in ever-increasing numbers.
Best,
Nick
