I'll be speaking (and hope to spark conversation) on applying
functional programming techniques to our more traditional
object-oriented world. Last month, Howard focused mostly on the
benefit to massive concurrency afforded by functional languages. This
talk will be more on the expressive power of functional languages, and
what we can do within our existing platforms. And, if that's not
enough excitement, there will be two (count 'em, two!) lolcats in the
presentation.

The boring description:

Topic: Your Brain on lambda(x)
Functional programming is (again) a hot topic among developers.
Languages such as Scala and Clojure have functional concepts at the
core of the langauge, and even more solidly object-oriented languages
such as Groovy and C# 3.0 include functional concepts. This talk will
cover whether langauge really matters, some functional techniques that
enhance the power of a languge, how to implement some of these using
existing Java syntax and semantics, and the future of functional
additions to the Java langauge.

Speaker: Phil Varner
Phil is a software developer with Oracle, working on the Business
Rules component of Fusion Middleware.
